How real was the movie "Open Road"?

In a hurry to drive cross-country, the little group of three never
drive on a highway, which, as we all know is a much faster way to get
from point A to B.

Is it just me, or is this idea of driving the back roads to go
cross-country an idea played out in present times...no one in their
right mind would ever do as they did in this movie, agree, disagree
and explain.
